2. Dental Floss / Thread Ligation
The claim: Tie a piece of dental floss or thread tightly around the base of the skin tag to cut off blood supply. The tag will necrose and fall off in 3–7 days.
The evidence: This is actually a legitimate medical technique — ligation — performed by dermatologists with surgical suture under sterile conditions. The home version, using non-sterile materials without anaesthesia or proper technique, carries risks of infection, incomplete ligation, and scarring. It works only on skin tags with a clearly defined narrow stalk.
Verdict: The principle is sound; the execution is problematic. If you can afford a dermatologist visit, let them do it properly.
3. Tea Tree Oil
The claim: Apply tea tree oil (melaleuca) to the skin tag 2–3 times daily; it will dry up and fall off in 3–6 weeks.
The evidence: Tea tree oil has documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties (Carson et al., 2006), and there is one case series (Thomsen & Kishi, 2010) suggesting efficacy against viral warts — which is relevant given the HPV connection to skin tags. Our simulation estimates approximately 40–55% clearance at 8 weeks, likely mediated through antiviral activity against HPV-positive tags rather than any direct cytotoxic effect.
Verdict: The best-supported natural topical option, particularly for HPV-associated tags. Slow but plausible mechanism.
4. Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)
The claim: "Black salve" containing bloodroot extract destroys skin tags by causing escharotic necrosis — controlled tissue destruction.
The evidence: Bloodroot is an escharotic agent that causes non-selective tissue destruction. It does not distinguish between skin tag tissue and normal tissue. Case reports in the dermatology literature describe significant scarring, disfigurement, and delayed healing from bloodroot application (Eastman, 2014). The FDA has explicitly warned against bloodroot-containing products marketed for skin lesion removal.
Verdict: Effective at tissue destruction — the problem is that it destroys everything, including healthy tissue, and leaves scars worse than the original tag. Avoid.
The Effective Remedies (What Evidence Supports)
1. Cryotherapy (Liquid Nitrogen)
How it works: A dermatologist applies liquid nitrogen (-196°C) to the skin tag, freezing the tissue and causing cell death. The tag blisters, desiccates, and falls off within 1–2 weeks.
Efficacy: 85–95% single-session clearance (Silverberg, 2019). For small filiform tags, this is often a 10-second procedure with no anaesthesia required.
Cost: Typically $100–300 per session (often not covered by insurance as "cosmetic").
Drawback: Can cause temporary hypopigmentation at the treatment site, particularly in darker skin tones.
2. Snip Excision
How it works: The dermatologist numbs the area with lidocaine, lifts the skin tag with forceps, and snips it off at the base with surgical scissors or a scalpel. Bleeding is controlled with aluminium chloride or light electrocautery.
Efficacy: 90–98% single-session clearance — the most reliable removal method because you can visually confirm complete excision.
Cost: Similar to cryotherapy. Can remove multiple tags in one visit.
Drawback: Requires local anaesthesia; minor bleeding; tiny risk of infection.
3. Electrocautery / Electrodesiccation
How it works: A fine needle delivers radiofrequency energy to the skin tag base, desiccating the tissue and sealing blood vessels simultaneously.
Efficacy: 90–98% clearance (Luba et al., 2003). Excellent for multiple small tags — a skilled dermatologist can treat dozens in a single session.

4. Thuja occidentalis (Arbor Vitae)

- Tea tree oil and Thuja tincture may work specifically because of their antiviral activity against HPV — not through any general "tag-dissolving" mechanism
- Immune support (adequate vitamin D, zinc, selenium) may reduce HPV-mediated tag formation

The condition acanthosis nigricans — velvety, dark thickening of skin in folds — frequently co-occurs with skin tags and is an even stronger marker of insulin resistance. If you have both, metabolic screening is not optional; it's urgent.
